Andrew Mellon’s youngsters, Paul Mellon and Ailsa Mellon Bruce, funded the building. M. Pei, the contemporary structure was completed in 1978 and was opened on June 1 of that 12 months by President Jimmy Carter. The new constructing was constructed to house the Museum’s assortment view siteÂ… of modern paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints, in addition to examine and research centers and places of work. The design obtained a National Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects in 1981.
